Herschel Space Observatory model for the Herschel Museum, Bath

Project Type

Educational Museum Model

Role

Model making, CAD, Design work, 3d Printing

Scale:

1:40

For the Herschel Museum in Bath, I created a 1:40 scale model of the Herschel Space Observatory. The project began with careful study of reference photographs, from which I produced hand-drawn blueprints to ensure an accurate representation of the spacecraft.

The construction combined multiple techniques to capture both detail and durability: 3D printing was used for complex components, hand modelmaking for fine detailing and assembly, and metalwork for structural and mechanical elements. Each stage of the process was carefully planned to balance scale accuracy, visual fidelity, and robustness for display.

The final model serves as an educational and visually engaging display piece, highlighting both the technical intricacies of the Herschel Space Observatory and the craftsmanship involved in its creation.
